Faye Richland

I paint landscapes, abstracts, and florals. My purpose is to bring out the essence of a scene or object in a colorful manner. The purpose of art to me is to emphasize the beauty of the world. The way I see my surroundings is a palette of bright colors. I completed college at Northeastern U. In Boston and have an M.A. in Education from Adelphi U. I took two years of life drawing during college and was referred to the Art Students League in NYC. I took classes with Knox Martin, an abstract expressionist painter. He inspired me to go forward and keep painting. Other instructors at The League were also kind, inspiring and encouraging. Henri Matisse is one of my favorite artists. I like his attitude, perspective and opinions related to art and painting – his own and in the world at large. Some of his quotes are as follows… “I have been no more than a medium, as it were”. “Derive happiness in oneself from a good day’s work, from illuminating the fog that surrounds us”. “There are always flowers for those who want to see them”. These thoughts express Matisse’s humility, dedication and finally, his optimism.
